2nd Wednesday Theater: a monthly play-reading of rarely-performed classics, undiscovered gems, old chestnuts, and exciting new works.
An enhanced reading of the cult classic The Bad Seed is set to scare CCftA audiences on October 16. Before The Bad Seed was a Hollywood hit, it was a Broadway play, and before it was a play, it was a novel. The reading, directed by Jo Brisbane, will also draw comparisons between these three major versions of The Bad Seed, which has been described as “a chilling study of evil…totally mesmeric." Fans of the play will enjoy the camp of its melodrama and dark humor. Brisbane also promises a special prize for the best Rhoda Penmark look-alike costume, and a special Best Penmanship Award.
The Bad Seedis a play “dramatized” by Maxwell Anderson (in 1955), and is based on The Bad Seed, a book written by William March (in 1954). Screenwriter John Lee Mahin wrote the movie adaptation, which was directed by Mervyn LeRoy for Warner Brothers Pictures (in 1956).
