Join us for the award-winning show "Sing Sistah Sing!" —conceived and written by internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Andrea Baker. Through a mixture of storytelling, jazz, blues, opera, art song, gospel, and rollicking piano virtuosity, "Sing Sistah Sing!" explores the extraordinary breadth of African American female voices. This celebration of sound brilliantly weaves together the incredible life stories of African American women during the Civil Rights Movement and their struggle for personal and artistic freedom at home and abroad. An expression of the inner truth of all African American women, "Sing Sistah Sing!" spotlights outstanding vocalists such as Leontyne Price, Marian Anderson, Donna Summer, Nina Simone, the great Billie Holiday, and others.
As Andrea Baker pays joyful, soulful homage to women who paved the way, she also tells her own deeply personal story. An artistic trailblazer with a constellation of operatic “firsts,” Ms. Baker made her operatic debut at San Francisco Opera in 1994. She has appeared at many of the worlds’ greatest opera houses and arts festivals including Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, Munich National Theatre, Royal Albert Hall, Salzburg Easter Festival, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Beijing Arts Festival, BBC Proms, and the Edinburgh International Festival.
Pianist Peter Maleitzke has a panoply of accomplishments to his name, even beyond his piano virtuosity and music composition. Among his theatrical credits is the first national production of Phantom of the Opera, as well as productions of Gypsy (for which he won a Dean Goodman Award), A Little Night Music, Rags, The Most Happy Fella, and Closer Than Ever.
