Ruby Rose Fox at the Cotuit Center for the Arts

Boston-based award-winning artist Ruby Rose Fox is a cultural messenger of our turbulent modern times. Her music is as sonically compelling as it is subversive, packed with lyrics that reflect and challenge our current political state, from #metoo, to the mass-shooting crisis.

Ruby is a vocal powerhouse of soul-driven, edgy indie-pop, whose voice threatens to knock down the walls of any room.

The Boston Herald describes Ruby Rose Fox’s music as “ arty, edgy rock ‘n’ roll that lets her be Lou Reed and Nico at the same time… [and seems] to come from another scene, another world.”

Her debut album, “Domestic” was released in 2016 and reached #8 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. In, 2017, Ruby was awarded a grant from The Boston Foundation and will release her sophomore record, Salt, in 2018. Also in 2017, Ruby started “Gifted,” a program that offers children voice lessons who could not otherwise afford them.

Part actress, director, and writer with eight music videos under her belt, Fox has never shied away from inventive ways to approach her art. Ruby Rose Fox recently released her sophomore album "Salt," an utterly cinematic piece of experimental pop that features dense soundscapes built to accompany Fox’s wall-shattering vocals.

A concert not to be missed!

Lori McKenna at the Cotuit Center for the Arts

Home, and the people who make it, have captivated Lori McKenna for years. Over the last three decades, as she became a wife and mother of five, she has also emerged as one of the most respected, prolific singer-songwriters in popular music. Her 2016 release The Bird and the Riflenetted three Grammy nominations, along with Americana Music Association nods––all firsts for McKenna as an artist. Then, she made history: In 2016, she became the first woman ever to win the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year two years in a row thanks to co-writing Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” and penning Tim McGraw’s no. 1 “Humble and Kind” solo. Both songs also clinched back-to-back Grammy wins for Best Country Song. In 2017, she became the Academy of Country Music’s first female Songwriter of the Year. McKenna’s much-anticipated eleventh studio album, produced by Dave Cobb, takes one of McKenna’s signature themes––family––and builds a tapestry of experiences she has lived and overheard, been told and dreamed up, to create a stunning ode to life’s defining relationships.

Sing Sistah Sing! at the Cotuit Center for the Arts

Join us for the award-winning show "Sing Sistah Sing!" —conceived and written by internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Andrea Baker. Through a mixture of storytelling, jazz, blues, opera, art song, gospel, and rollicking piano virtuosity, "Sing Sistah Sing!" explores the extraordinary breadth of African American female voices. This celebration of sound brilliantly weaves together the incredible life stories of African American women during the Civil Rights Movement and their struggle for personal and artistic freedom at home and abroad. An expression of the inner truth of all African American women, "Sing Sistah Sing!" spotlights outstanding vocalists such as Leontyne Price, Marian Anderson, Donna Summer, Nina Simone, the great Billie Holiday, and others.

As Andrea Baker pays joyful, soulful homage to women who paved the way, she also tells her own deeply personal story. An artistic trailblazer with a constellation of operatic “firsts,” Ms. Baker made her operatic debut at San Francisco Opera in 1994. She has appeared at many of the worlds’ greatest opera houses and arts festivals including Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, Munich National Theatre, Royal Albert Hall, Salzburg Easter Festival, Aix-en-Provence Festival, Beijing Arts Festival, BBC Proms, and the Edinburgh International Festival.

Pianist Peter Maleitzke has a panoply of accomplishments to his name, even beyond his piano virtuosity and music composition. Among his theatrical credits is the first national production of Phantom of the Opera, as well as productions of Gypsy (for which he won a Dean Goodman Award), A Little Night Music, Rags, The Most Happy Fella, and Closer Than Ever.

INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY CELEBRATION

Cape Conservatory is celebrating International Jazz Day at its Falmouth campus on Tuesday, April 30, at 6 PM, with recitals by its CJazz and C-Rock ensembles and an exhibition of paintings of jazz musicians by fine artist Sean J. Cassidy.

International Jazz Day brings people around the world together to celebrate and learn more about jazz, its roots and impacts, and raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialog and mutual understanding, to reinforce international cooperation and communication.

Artist Sean J. Cassidy is a big fan of jazz, so much so that he has created a series of portraits of jazz musicians, including such greats as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong, Sonny Rollins, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie.

“I try to capture the improv nature of jazz and the essence and energy of the music and the musicians,” he said. “I listen only to that artist’s music when I am painting his or her portrait. I riff on their music and play with the notion of improv, expressing it through color and brushstrokes.”   Miles Davis
Bart Weisman, CJazz program director
Gregg Sullivan, C-Rock teaching artist

Matthew Wright - lute, voice

Ninth Annual Bob Dylan Birthday Celebration

Ninth Annual Bob Dylan Birthday Celebration

Come gather 'round people wherever you roam! On Friday, May 10, Cotuit Center for the Arts will hold its 9th annual celebration of the music of Bob Dylan. The show will feature the Dylan-interpreting talents of Art Tebbetts, Danielle Miraglia, and Matt Borrello.

Borrello and Tebbetts share a love for the music of Bob Dylan. Both are accomplished folk singers. Tebbetts hosts an Open Mic in his hometown of New Bedford, which is where he and Borrello first got together share their large repertoire of Dylan songs.

Born and raised in the small Southeastern Massachusetts town of Dighton, Borrello started playing guitar at 14. Now in his mid-20s, he usually performs as a solo acoustic act and writes songs that often blend political and personal themes.

Danielle Miraglia has been described as a dynamic and captivating musician, who “comes armed with a strong steady thumb on an old Gibson” and “sings with gutsy passion, blows a man harp, and writes songs both tender and timely.” She grew up in Revere, but is steeped in the Delta Blues, and has shared the stage with Johnny Winter, Bettye Lavette, John Hammond Jr., Joan Osborne, John Mayall, Sonny Landreth, John Oates, Colin Hay, Robert Cray, Rodney Crowell and many more and is a frequent guest of The James Montgomery Blues Band.

Judy Collins in Concert at the Tilden Arts Center

Payomet & Cotuit Center for the Arts are ecstatic to welcome Judy Collins at Tilden Arts Center in West Barnstable!!

Few singers have the staying power of folk icon, Grammy award winner and legend Judy Collins. For nearly 45 illustrious years, her dulcet tones have graced our ears, and her poetic lyrics have galvanized a generation. She has released more than 40 albums, has had numerous Top 10 hits, Grammy nominations and gold and platinum selling albums.

Judy has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50-album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century.

As creatively vigorous as ever, Judy is still writing, touring worldwide, and nurturing fresh talent. She is a modern day Renaissance woman who is also an accomplished painter, filmmaker, record label head, musical mentor, and an in-demand keynote speaker for mental health and suicide prevention. She continues to create music of hope and healing that lights up the world and speaks to the heart.
