18th Annual Art and Souls Masquerade Ball: Time Travel Revelry

18th Annual Art and Souls Masquerade Ball: Time Travel Revelry

Cotuit Center for the Arts will hold its 18th Annual Art and Souls Masquerade Ball, Time Travel Revelry, on Saturday, October 27, at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $10.

Time Travel is the theme of this year’s horrifyingly fun Halloween dance party. There will be a DJ, dancing, time-travel-themed decorations, and “bone-chilling” refreshments, and, if past Art and Souls Balls are any indication, a multitude of hilarious, frightening, and delightfully creative costumes.

“This is a wide-open category,” said Michelle law, coordinator of the ball and a member of CCftA’s curatorial committee. “Come as a time traveler, a time machine, or anyone from any period in history, past or future—from a sweet medieval princess to a 25th-century avenging alien. I’m always excited to see how people interpret the theme—they do such imaginative things.”

Law has put a link to a list of time travel books and movies on the Center’s Facebook page and website. “There is a huge variety of books and movies to inspire party-goers,” said Law, “from classics like Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” Twain’s “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court,” and H.G. Wells’ “The Time Machine,” to contemporary movies like “The Planet of the Apes,” “Groundhog Day,” “Time after Time,” “Midnight in Paris,” and “Back to the Future,” there is something to inspire everyone. And, of course, people are always encouraged to put their own spin on the theme.”

Many attendees make their own costumes, from the very simple to the intricately crafted. Couples and groups are encouraged to develop themed costumes.

“But, you don’t have to have an elaborate or handmade costume to have fun,” said Law. “A mask or make-up will get you into the party mood too.”

Law is happy to give costume hints. She says that many people find inexpensive costume materials at vintage stores and consignment shops. “Do take into account safety considerations,” she said. “Make sure the costume does not restrict your movement or your vision.”

There will be prizes for Funniest, Scariest, Group, and Best Time Travel-themed costumes.

Cotuit Center for the Arts is at 4404 Route 28 in Cotuit. For more information, visit artsonthecape.org or call 508-428-0669.

CONSERVATORY YOUTH BALLET PRESENTS MOONLIGHT SONATA (IN THE 21st CENTURY)

The Cape Conservatory Youth Ballet presents Moonlight Sonata (in the 21st Century), an original ballet written and choreographed by Jane E. Caputo. The afternoon opens with a recital by all members of the Conservatory Youth Ballet.

“I’ve loved the Sonata since I was a child; I can even remember the first time I heard it,” explained Caputo. “When I listen to the music, I visualize the dance. I am profoundly excited to present my vision, my interpretation of the music through dance to a live audience.”

- Jane E. Caputo

The ballet is based in classical technique with modern approaches in phrasing and form. As the two styles of dance merge throughout the sonata, Caputo weaves references to the moon: in the first movement, the New Moon; the second movement, the Full Moon; and in the final movement, the steps and formations suggest an Eclipse.
