Terra Incognita: Exploring New Terrain - Reception

"Terra Incognita: Exploring New Terrain is a record of my personal journey as an artist as I step out of my comfort zone by dramatically altering the scale of my work. Working intuitively, I moved deep into new terrain where mystery and unpredictability dictate where the process will lead.

This exhibition of large-scale mixed media digital prints is the result of a pilgrimage into the unknown territory of my creative life. While reflecting on my early influences, overcoming fear, and celebrating new discoveries, my emphasis was on process, inner reflection and spontaneity.

Each digital print begins by choosing images from an extensive collection of my scanned original drawings, paintings, monoprints, and photographs. These elements are then layered over one another. Blending modes are used paying careful attention to hues, form and composition. Hard edges, line and color fields combine in surprising ways. Transparent multilayers echo fainter versions of shapes and textures. The finish work may be altered with pastel, paint, colored pencils or inks. By keeping the process fluid, I enjoy a cross-pollination of the various disciplines."

Black and White: Launch Point - Reception

What do we think about when we hear the words Black and White? For years, contemporary artists have explored both the literal and figurative ideas expressed in the term “black and white."
We propose a contextual exhibition exploring the various ideas of black and white related to our lives and living spaces. We envision a gallery that looks and feels like you are walking in to an artist’s studio, or a collector's home. We hope to create a space that uses artisan created furniture, utilitarian objects, art objects, and lighting to set a stage that highlights each artist’s reference to the idea of Black and White.

We have a carefully curated group of artists representing both 2 dimensional and fine craft media. Sarah Caruso, ceramicist, Andreas Kuehn, photographer, Neil Grant, sculptor, Arthur Levi Rainville, photographer, Jacqueline Reeves, painter, Matthew Bielen, painter, Seth Rainville, ceramicist, Yukimi Matsumoto, glass blower, Barbara Willis, fiber artist, Catherine Pritchett, fiber artist, and Kenneth Wadoski, fine furniture maker, Steve Swain, metalsmith, who will create the “bones” of the space. This eclectic group of artists come from culturally diverse artistic and educational backgrounds and each brings to the space their approach to the concept of “black and white."

Gretchen Romey-Tanzer - Opening Reception

November 8 – December 22

Winter Art Exhibition Opening Reception:
Friday, November 8, 4:30pm – 6:00pm

Weaver Gretchen Romey-Tanzer uses the double layer technique, intricate design, and brilliantly colored cotton fiber to create works that appear to collect light, cast shadow and sparkle with prismatic ebullience. Her mastery is in her ability to create the appearance of visual depth, and to provide the illusion of three dimensions, through contrasting and analogous color placement.  Notable for the complexity of its strong graphic shapes and abstract alignment of patterns, City Planning, her most recent work, was inspired by hours spent in Chicago traffic. It took the artist nearly four years to execute, as it evolved from preliminary sketches, drawings, and paintings through to the completed woven artwork. Additional selections from her current projects, influenced by road maps and traffic patterns, will be among the works on view.

Romey-Tanzer has been weaving for over 35 years and is a 2019 recipient of the prestigious Artist Fellowship Award in Crafts from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. She has received numerous awards, including the top exhibitors prize in both Baltimore and Crafts at the Castle, Boston, and her work is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  She weaves and teaches out of her studio in Brewster, MA.

Soo Sunny Park: Boundary Conditions - Reception

The artist Soo Sunny Park is known for creating monumental, immersive installations that transform their environments into realms of moving light, reflection, and shadow. In Boundary Conditions, she weaves together a metal grid with iridescent Plexiglas that transmits, reflects, and refracts daylight to create an otherworldly installation. Changing light conditions reveal different facets of the sculpture, so that during different times of day it shifts from translucent and clear to colorful and prismatic.

Look This Way - Women Artists - Reception

Jodi Colella | Jackie Reeves | Kimberly Sheerin
September 6 – October 30

Fall Art Exhibitions Opening Reception:
Friday, September 13, 4:30 – 6:00pm

The Cahoon Museum invites three women artists working in mixed-media and fiber, painting, and ceramic to collaborate on and exhibition with the theme of family photographs and the topic of women and memory.

Contemporary mixed-media artist, Jodi Colella, stitches together past and present in her current series, Unidentified Woman. Colella scours flea markets for tintypes and then alters the images of unknown people from the past by embroidering on the fragile surfaces of the photographs.

Cape Cod Chalkboard Studios artist, Jackie Reeves, presents selections from her current body of work which consists of paintings created from mining generations of inherited family albums and Super 8 films. She both pays homage to the past and reinvents moments once captured with the camera.

Kim Sheerin is a Falmouth-based potter who uses techniques of slip trailing, stamping, and sgraffito. She is influenced by the natural world of Cape Cod and by Islamic and East Indian art. Her work addresses global issues affecting women, and her series “pots with a purpose” treats the subject of human trafficking.

DAGUERREOTYPE MASTERWORKS FROM THE DAWN OF PHOTOGRAPHY

September 6 – October 30
Opening Reception: September 13 | 4:30 – 6:00pm

This exhibition is a comprehensive survey celebrating the art of the daguerreotype- the first successful method of photography. Through the Looking Glass features important examples from America, France, England, and the Middle East. The nearly 150 plates include both cased examples and larger framed plates. All the major collecting genres of daguerreotypes -landscapes, architectural studies, occupationals, erotic stereoviews, post-mortems, and of course portraiture- are represented by superb, often surprising examples.

The daguerreotype was the first successful method of photography. It is a unique positive image that lives in a highly polished silver-coated copper plate. Its invention was announced to an electrified audience in Paris on August 19, 1839, at a joint meeting of the Académie des Sciences and the Académie des Beaux- Arts. A joint forum was the appropriate venue, as Louis Daguerre’s invention would prove equally revolutionary in science and technology, in social history, and in the arts.

Also at the meeting was the “American Leonardo” Samuel Morse, the painter, who was being honored for his invention of the telegraph. While in Paris, Morse learned daguerreotypy from Daguerre himself; back in New York, Morse then taught the art to interested colleagues in both the arts and sciences who would go on to open portrait studios of their own. While “daguerreotypomania” swept both France and America, it was in America that it had its greatest social (and commercial) impact, as portraiture of the common man captured the essence of Jacksonian democracy. The daguerreotype was the dominant mode of photography in France in the 1840s, but in America the daguerreian era would last through the 1850s. By the time of the Civil War it had been supplanted by the ambrotype, the tintype, and especially the albumen print from a collodion-on-glass negative, which would prevail till the turn of the century.

The show is organized by art2art Circulating Exhibitions, LLC All works are from the collection of Michael Mattis and Judith Hochberg.

The works of these artists will be on display:

 Percy Fortini-Wright:  Street Art

The title of this exhibition is somewhat of a paradox. This body of work is realistically spray-painted street scenes on canvas, the art being the street itself.  Thus the title “Street Art.” Fortini-Wright is particularly drawn to night scenes with their distinct lights, wet streets, and cars dashing by that many can relate to. Fortini-Wright, a night owl who loves to drive, finds these scenes not only familiar but also a time of reflection. His aim is to put you, the viewer, in the driver seat as an observer.

Joe Fusaro:  Bite Your Tongue

In this exhibit, Joe Fusaro presents collage and mixed-media works that utilize human gestures and original photographs to place viewers in the midst of something recognizable and simultaneously fleeting.  Fusaro tears and cuts into his photographs and handmade paper in order to present images we feel we recognize but can't quite place... all the while biting our tongues to find the right words or simply keeping the memory to ourselves.

Erik Durant:  Myths and Narratives

Durant’s personal work is a quest to understand the human condition. As a sculptor his main interests lie in gesture, movement, and pose. His works are at times Illustrative, but always realist, exploring historical, and contemporary narratives—both known, and unknown. While many of the characters that he chooses to sculpt seem to be rooted in the past, they are his own imaginings of things not fully understood. Issues surrounding beauty, the body, and identity, give rise to a version of contemporary mythology that is new, yet seemingly familiar.

Exhibits Run May 11- June 9, 2019
