Take a walk through history.  The Kennedy Legacy Trail is a self-guided walking tour of sites in downtown Hyannis, Cape Cod that are significant to the Kennedy family.  At each of the 10 sites, an informational sign, and links to video Information uncovers stories and history about the Kennedy’s on Cape Cod.  The entire walking trail is 1.6 miles long and may be visited in any order.  Brochures with a map of the sites can be downloaded at http://www.kennedylegacytrail.com and www.artsbarnstable.com are also available at the JFK Hyannis Museum at 397 Main Street, Hyannis

Eastham Turnip Festival

The 16th Annual Eastham Turnip Festival organized by the staff of the Eastham Library. Turnip fun for all ages. FREE admission.

Turnip Cook-Off and food sampling, Turnip Shuck-Off (who can peel a turnip the fastest?), guess the weight of the Enormous Turnip, live bluegrass music with Higher Ground String Band, free henna body art (turnip designs an option, of course). Stroll through the Harvest Marketplace: locally grown produce, locally designed handcrafts, local book authors and of course Eastham Turnips for sale. Come for lunch: pulled pork sandwiches, crepes to order, pizza by the slice, locally made ice cream treats, chocolate confestions, and NEW this year ~ a raw bar featuring Eastham raised oysters and quohogs. Kids Turn Up for Fun Zone: juggler, face painter, balloon artist, temporary turnip tattoos, make & take craft projects, Mr. Turnip Head decorating contest, Turnip Bowling & turnip games.

Visit Library displays. Learn about upcoming Library programs and the upcoming Repurposed Book Art Contest . Aldrich Astronomical Society will demonstrate how to use the Library owned telescope, available for patrons to borrow. Volunteers will demonstrate how to use Library owned equipment for the visually and hearing impaired.

Santa sightings! Santa arrives by fire truck, then visit in a few spots along Main Street:
Noon-1:00pm: The Jolly guy arrives by antique fire truck at the big clock on the corner of Main and Winter Streets, and meets and greets all!
1:30pm-2:30pm: Meet and greet with Santa at Katie’s Ice Cream at the corner of Main and Bassett.

Music, food, crafts, petting zoo, trolley & more—all along Main Street!
11:00am -4:00pm
There will be a variety of free activities throughout the day sponsored by Hyannis Main St. BID and Main St. business’s, including the annual Cookie Stroll Contest, in which visitors can vote for their favorite cookie from participating businesses, and Santa’s Reindeer Roundup, a scavenger hunt to find all of Santa’s hidden reindeer with prizes for participants. Stop at several ‘Smile Spots’ along the street, and find more at the bandstand on the Hyannis Village Green and Harbor Overlook.
Carolers and various local musicians will be singing and playing throughout the street, as well as delicious food sampling from various restaurants. Face painting, plenty of children’s arts & crafts activities throughout the street and Trolley rides will be offered to take visitors around the downtown.

Noon-6:00pm:
Hyannis Main Street stroll visitors can walk through the Hyannis Village Green, stop at the bandstand for one of many Smile Spots to discover along Main Street to Hyannis Harbor. Along the way is “Gingerbread Lane at the Harbor Overlook” which includes the artist shanties looking magically delicious with gingerbread house decor, artists and artisans selling hand crafted items, free crafts for the kids along with The Original Gourmet Brunch selling food & kid and adult beverages.

Hyannis Harbor Boat Parade and Santa’s arrival by boat!
4:00pm-5:30pm

Watch Santa arrive by boat in this unique celebration! Santa’s Boat Parade sponsored and organized by the Greater Hyannis Civic Association provides fun activities for kids, music and chowder, hot chocolate, coffee and cookies for sale, starting at 4:00pm.
Starting approx: 4:30 pm-4:45pm, the boats enter the harbor, lighting the way for Santa to arrive by police boat!
By 5:00pm, Santa is dropped off to the docks and makes his way to his special shanty, where he will meet & greet children.

PARK AND WALK!
Free parking at Town Hall, Red Cross, North Street and Ocean Street lot and Bismore Park parking lots.

BREAKFAST WITH SANTA:
Two seatings: kick off with a 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 am.
Tickets are available at the British Beer Company, Hyannis.com and at the Hyannis Chamber of Commerce office located on South Street, Hyannis.
Tickets are $10.00 each and must be purchased in advance.
Tickets include a full American breakfast, a visit with Santa and entertainment by Cape Cod Carolers.  Breakfast with Santa is sponsored by the Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce and The British Beer Company.  All proceeds benefit the Barnstable Charitable Foundation.

Join Director Ian Ives for a “holly-day” season walk at Mass Audubon's Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary in Falmouth, home to one of the largest holly plantations in New England. Ashumet features more than 65 types of hollies, ranging from American to Asian to European specimens, as well as the rare Franklinia tree. Learn about the natural history of the Sanctuary's 50 original Hollies propagated by former property owner and Massachusetts's first Agriculture Secretary, Wilfred Wheeler.

Holly Guides will be handed out free of charge. Participants can bring one grocery bag with them to fill with holly boughs for the holidays.

As the tour starts you will hear stories of the conflict between the Loyalists and the American Whigs (Patriots) and how England had a stronghold on this small quaint town. There are over ten stops on the tour and eight have ghost stories. You will visit Cobb’s Hill Cemetery where many strange and unusual things have taken place. You will visit such places as the Barnstable Tavern & Restaurant where a mischievous specter lurks in the dining room. As we walk along the historic highway there is a possibility that the tour may be followed by one of the town former residents. As the tours ends you will enter the darken “Old Jail” built in 1690’s by the order of Massachusetts Bay Colony Courts, which is actively haunted.

Enchanted Forest at Mass Audubon

For the Friday evening before Halloween, the woodlands will awaken. A guide will lead you along a lantern-lit trail where you will encounter creatures of the night - some strange, some silly and some who have much to say.

Tours are roughly one hour in length. Warm clothing, sturdy shoes and a flashlight are recommended. Costumes are encouraged!!

We recommend this program for children ages 3 through 12, but everyone is welcome. There is no charge for Children 0-2.

WHO: The Wellfleet OysterFest is brought to you by Wellfleet SPAT, Shellfish Promotion and Tasting, Inc., a non-profit organization chartered in 2002. SPAT is devoted to sustaining Wellfleet’s shellfishing and aquaculture industries. The festivities are generously supported by individual contributors, local businesses and hundreds of fantastic volunteers who donate their time to make the OysterFest an incredible success each year.

WHAT: The Wellfleet OysterFest is an annual celebration of the town’s famous oysters, clams and its deep-rooted shellfishing traditions. Wellfleet’s town center comes alive for this two-day family festival that brings together locals and visitors for a weekend full of food, art, music, fun and games. Sorry, no pets or outside alcohol allowed. All bags are subject to search.

WHERE: on Main Street in Wellfleet, located on Cape Cod. There are lots of fun and educational activities at various locations all around town such as a 5K Road Race and Pickleball Round Robin, both presented by the Wellfleet Recreation Department. 

Each year, SPAT creates educational activities designed to improve knowledge and awareness of area shellfishing traditions and techniques. Proceeds from these activities and the ‘Fest fund the organization’s educational mission which includes a local college scholarship programcommunity grant awards and initiatives to support Wellfleet’s shellfishing and aquaculture industries. To date, SPAT has given more than $514,000 back to the local community.

WEATHER: The OysterFest goes on rain or shine! Dress for fall weather!

Cost: Tickets for entry into the ‘Fest are $10 per day. All food and retail items are priced individually. Some satellite events such as the cooking demonstrations require an additional fee. All activities for children are free.

 Cotuit Library is getting into the Halloween spirit with a Scarecrow Making Contest.! Stop in and participate, where we provide you with all the building materials you need; you just need to bring the clothes! Then we’ll display the scarecrows on our front lawn for a week to let people vote for their favorite. The winners will be announced Saturday, October 26th, and prizes can be claimed during library hours.

The Town of Barnstable, in partnership with the Cape Cod Art Center, offers day excursions to this unspoiled landscape. It is a special place to create and immerse yourself in the great outdoors. From time to time a Sandy Neck Beach Park naturalist will travel out with the group and share their firsthand knowledge and expertise of this “living museum”.

Yarmouth Seaside Fest

Now in its 41st year, the annual celebration brings together tourists and locals alike for everything from food contests and 5k races to an art sale featuring 125+ artists and crafters from across the country. Live music, a kayak and canoe race, pie‐eating contests, sand sculptures, a festive parade and harborside fireworks round out the fun.

The Cause

This year all funds raised from the race with go toward our programs that support children impacted by substance use on Cape Cod. These initiatives offer community resources to ensure our children have what they need to live healthier, more fullfilling lives. Family Continuity is a 501 c 3 non profit organization that provides a spectrum of emotional, developmental, and behavioral programs for children, adolescents, and families throughout Massachusetts.

The Race - starts at 10 am

The race starts and finishes in front of Seafood Sam’s restaurant on the Cape Cod Canal. Runners will race through Sandwich Marina and around the Town Neck neighborhood. Join us for a fun event and help all kids be healthy and happy.

Barnstable Village's Haunted & History Walking Tour

Are you looking for something out of the ordinary to fill your evenings? Join us as we walk the historic and haunted “Old Kings Highway” in Barnstable Village.. As the tour starts you will hear stories of the conflict between the Loyalists and the American Whigs (Patriots) and how England had a stronghold on this small quaint town. There are over ten stops on the tour and eight have ghost stories. You will visit Cobb’s Hill Cemetery where many strange and unusual things have taken place. You will visit such places as the Barnstable Tavern & Restaurant where a mischievous specter lurks in the dining room. As we walk along the historic highway there is a possibility that the tour may be followed by one of the town former residents. As the tours ends you will enter the darken “Old Jail” built in 1690’s by the order of Massachusetts Bay Colony Courts, which is actively haunted.

Price: $15.00 adults,  $8.00 children 8-12yrs old, under 8 FREE

Stroll along Hyannis Harbor and meet Cape Cod artists selling their art while working in their seaside studios. Visitors to the Hyannis HyArts Artist Shanties can spend time at the Harbor Overlook and at Bismore Park experiencing the sights and sounds of a working waterfront.  Visit artists, listen to live music, grab a bite or take out for a picnic in the park.  If you're looking for fine handmade local products or the perfect Cape Cod souvenir or gift it’s a terrific place to shop and always free to browse!

Fall Walking Week-End

To celebrate the Cape Pathways Walking Weekend, several walks of varying lengths and pace have been scheduled over Columbus Day weekend. Sunscreen, bug spray, appropriate footwear and layered clothing are recommended:

Friday October 11:

  • 7am: Crocker Neck Morning Jog, a 1.5 mile jog through 97 acre conservation area, pausing to catch a view at Wading Beach. Dress in layers and appropriate running attire. Meet on Santuit Road, park at 2nd gate opposite 92 Cotuit Cove Road. Space limited. Contact Barnstable Land Trust to register.

  • 8 am: A Loop Through Barnstable Village, a 1.5 -2 hour, 2 mile moderate pace walk using a combination of woodland trails, Pathways routes, streets and sidewalks. Park along Main Street 6A and gather on the lawn in front of the Barnstable Superior Courthouse. Contact leader-Doug Payson, 508-737-7000; dpayson@kinlingrover.com

  • 10 am: Woods to Great Marsh, a 4 mile, 2 hour moderate terrain and pace walk through the Old Jail Lane Conservation area to the Great Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary.   • 5:30 pm: Sunset Walk at Crocker Neck, an interpretative walk with author and ecologist Gil Newton. Meet on Santuit Road, 2nd gate opposite 92 Cotuit Cove Road. $5 (Barnstable Land Trust members are free).

Saturday October 12:

  • 8 am: Old Neck Lane Walk, a 1 mile, 1 hour walk over hilly landscape featuring Cape Cod history and natural history. Meet at Cape Cod Community College, parking lot #7. Contact leader Kris Clark at kris@meganet.net; 508-776-7522

  • 10 am: From Barrel Hill to Barnstable Harbor, a 3 mile, 2-2 1/2 moderate paced walk with steep hills highlighting scenic vistas. Meet on the lawn at Barnstable Superior Court House. Walk leader Doug Payson, 508-737-7000 dpayson@kinlingrover.com

  • 12:00 noon: Sandy Neck Beach Walk, a 2 mile, 1.5 hour walk through diverse habitats of Sandy Neck, watching for rare migratory shorebirds and diamondback terrapin hatchlings. Meet at Sandy Neck gatehouse. Walk leader Sean Kortis, sean.kortis@town.barnstable.ma.us
