Join Director Ian Ives for a “holly-day” season walk at Mass Audubon's Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary in Falmouth, home to one of the largest holly plantations in New England. Ashumet features more than 65 types of hollies, ranging from American to Asian to European specimens, as well as the rare Franklinia tree. Learn about the natural history of the Sanctuary's 50 original Hollies propagated by former property owner and Massachusetts's first Agriculture Secretary, Wilfred Wheeler.

Holly Guides will be handed out free of charge. Participants can bring one grocery bag with them to fill with holly boughs for the holidays.

Fall Ducks of Cape Cod

Sea ducks are some of the most beautiful and intriguing visitors to the Massachusetts coast during the month of November. Explore areas of the Cape to view eiders, scoters, buffleheads, common goldeneyes and red-breasted mergansers as they pause in their migratory journeys. The program will also focus on freshwater pond habitats as well where participants can spot Northern pintails, Northern shovelers, blue winged teals, green winged teals, Eurasian wigeons and American wigeons. This is a great opportunity to learn how these birds live, feed and migrate. Participants will travel in a MA Audubon mini van to various locations around the Mid Cape.

Enchanted Forest at Mass Audubon

For the Friday evening before Halloween, the woodlands will awaken. A guide will lead you along a lantern-lit trail where you will encounter creatures of the night - some strange, some silly and some who have much to say.

Tours are roughly one hour in length. Warm clothing, sturdy shoes and a flashlight are recommended. Costumes are encouraged!!

We recommend this program for children ages 3 through 12, but everyone is welcome. There is no charge for Children 0-2.

Sponsored by the Unitarian Church of Barnstable Green Sanctuary Committee The largest annual grassroots solar event in the world is coming to Cape Cod on October 5 and 6.

The largest annual grassroots solar event in the world is coming to Cape Cod on October 5 and 6. The nonprofit American Solar Energy Society (ASES), Solar United Neighborhoods (SUN), and the Unitarian Church of Barnstable are bringing the solar tour to the Cape Cod region. The 2019 edition of the Solar Tour is the 24th anniversary of the national tour. This year’s tour will be the first to host open houses in every state with the goal of engaging 50,000 people attending and hosting the Solar Tour. The Cape Cod Solar Tour will show real-life examples of how neighbors are harnessing free energy from the sun to generate electricity, warm or cool their homes, heat water, and slash monthly utility bills. The Solar Tour is self-guided and free to the public Saturday from 10 to 4 and Sunday, noon to 3. Open House Tours, highlighting ten or more local homes, churches, and businesses, start at the Unitarian Church of Barnstable where programs and maps may be picked up. The Tour also features a Sustainability Fair in Warren Hall of the Barnstable UU Church, 3330 Main Street (Route 6A) in Barnstable. Solar installers and other sustainable living non-profits and experts from Cape Cod will be available to answer questions about Solar PV, related renewable technologies, Green Building, and other sustainable living strategies.

This block party marks the first ever collaboration between the Chapman Gallery, the Cahoon Museum of American ArtCotuit Center for the ArtsIsaiah Thomas BookstoreTurtleback Limited, and Villaggio Restaurant, all located along rte. 28. Each venue will be open and free to the public. Enjoy visual art, food, drink, tours, music, literature and bring your friends, family and neighbors. Visitors may park at any of the participating venues and enjoy complimentary shuttles that will be making the loop from Noon to 4pm.

You will visit such places as the Barnstable Tavern & Restaurant where a mischievous specter lurks in the dining room. As we walk along the historic highway there is a possibility that the tour may be followed by one of the town former residents. As the tours ends you will enter the darken “Old Jail” built in 1690’s by the order of Massachusetts Bay Colony Courts, which is actively haunted.

Description:

We’ll travel by SUV along the Province Lands inner dune trail, an area not open to public vehicles, near the tip of Cape Cod. We’ll make multiple stops to photograph the majestic dunes and the natural beauty of the surrounding areas. Tours begin in the late afternoon and end with the last light of day after sunset. Tours last approximately 2.5 hours. John will offer tips on how to photograph the various scenes.

What to bring:
Any camera (dslr or mirrorless equivalent recommended)
Any lens. You’ll get great shots with a wide angle and/or standard or telephoto lenses.
Tripod (optional)
Sun screen, hat, etc.

WEATHER CANCELLATION POLICY
All tours will go out as scheduled on cloudy or clear days. Cancellations for inclement weather will be at the sole discretion of the instructor. If the instructor determines the weather (i.e. lightning storm) will prohibit the tour from going out, the tour will be rescheduled or a refund will be given.
